Electronic / Electro-acoustic/ Dream-pop/ Ensemble (London, ON)
Wormwood is an electro-acoustic duo comprised of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Christina Willatt and multi-instrumentalist/producer Andrew Wenaus based in London, Ontario. They bring together IDM and vocal pop. The project aims to capture feelings of anxiety and ecstasy in response to the contradictions of contemporary pop culture: beauty and mystery, simplicity and chaos, pleasure and angst, responsibility and fantasy, equality and the hauntings of celebrity. A combination of melodic lyricism with bursts of rapid-fire rhythmic precision, their music is a conflation of traditional songwriting combed through and capturing bursts and bits from the mediascape of excess. Their 2013 debut album Sunfloating (self-released) and 2014 EP Microdot (Punctum Records) were both received with critical acclaim. They recently appeared on the Touched – Music for Macmillan Cancer Support compilation alongside Bibio, Autechre, Plaid, Nils Frahm, Machinedrum, Zachary Gray, O’Haara, and A Souvenir, among others. Their most recent album, O, (A Person Disguised as People) was released on 19 August 2016. Having performed in Canada and the United States they combine live instrumentation, computers, and electronics. The band is currently collaborating with Koine Ensemble for live performances and plans to develop an interactive live performance for ballet and contemporary dance in Toronto.
